SUMMARY

Title: STEM Digital Distance Learning in University Teaching (STEM – DIGITALIS)

Project number: 2020-1-EL01-KA226-HE-094691

Funding programme: EU ERASMUS + KA2

Project period: From 01/06/2021 to 31/05/2023 (24 months)

Countries: Estonia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands

Partners: 5

Coordinator: Stavrou Dimitris, University of Crete, Greece

MOTIVATION

The pandemic and its impact on all levels of education with the compulsory conversion of nearly all offered courses in an online form, has brought foreword the need for support for both educators and learners to develop digital skills, given the fact that either the educators or the students were properly equipped with the necessary methodology for blended or distance education. Additional difficulties arose in the teaching of science courses that require students’ hands-on interaction to develop not only knowledge but also skills.

MAIN GOAL

The STEM DIGITALIS project aims at designing and developing blended and distance learning environments for teaching prospective science teachers advanced STEM topics.

Particularly, the specific objectives of the project are the:

  1. Development of innovative digital teaching scenarios on advanced STEM topics
  2. Development of teaching and learning strategies that promote meaningful use of digital technologies for teaching advanced STEM topics in blended and distance learning environments
  3. Development of an open-access educational platform where digital teaching material on advanced STEM topics may be shared across Europe in diverse educational, economical, and cultural contexts
  4. Development of guidelines and recommendations for teaching prospective science teachers advanced STEM topics in online environments

INTELLECTUAL OUTPUTS

The partnership will collaborate in order to realize five Intellectual Outputs (IOs):

  • IO1: Five digital teaching scenarios on advanced STEM topics
  • IO2: Strategies of teaching advanced STEM topics in blended and distance learning environments
  • IO3: Open educational platform and Open Education Resources on digitally supported advanced STEM topics teaching
  • IO4: Guidelines for the design and implementation of digital teaching material on advanced STEM topics
  • IO5: Recommendations for policymakers to promote teaching on advanced STEM topics in both pre- and in-service science teacher education

Milestones of the project are also conceived:

  • One international summer school for prospective science teachers that will take place at the end of the first year of the project
  • One international summer school for university lecturers that will take place at the end of the first year of the project
  • 5 Online joint seminars in each partner’s country for prospective teachers that will take place at the end of the second year of the project
  • 1 Online joint seminar for university lecturers of the participating countries that will take place at the end of the second year of the project

EXPECTED RESULTS

We expect that the STEM DIGITALIS results will impact at local, national, and European level by developing digital resources on advanced STEM topics to be used for blended and distance learning in science courses, improving digital competences for both educators and prospective teachers, as well as practical knowledge on how to use digital resources for science-related courses.
